Issued by District Secretary to all clubs, D Team and PDGs: Bereavement Notice - PDG David Bowyer - Tamworth Anker RC It is with great sadness that I report that after a long illness PDG David Bowyer (DG for D1060 2004-5) died yesterday - 24th November 2018 - in Heartlands Hospital Birmingham. David was a very committed Rotarian, and his enthusiasm and knowledgeable contributions will be missed. He really enjoyed his time working at both club and district level and he shared his expertise with enthusiasm. He will be sadly missed in District 1060. Details of funeral arrangements will be circulated when known.

YOUTH SPEAKS
John Parkinson <johnparkinson@email.com> Attachments Thu, 15 Nov, 22:14 (12 days ago) to johnparkinson
D1060: Youth Speaks Competitions 2018-19: Issued by District Secretary to all clubs and D Team: For the attention of the Club Youth Leaders and Club Secretaries (would club Secretary please pass on to Youth person in their club)
It has come to that time of year where many of us become involved with Schools and other Youth organisations on Youth programmes once again, for some of us a very busy but rewarding time. For me it is The Youth Speaks Competitions that I'm running this year that I'm particularly interested in. Rotary "Youth Speaks" is designed to help young people achieve what is increasingly required in today's world - to confidently present their points of view to others.
For those that were at The Youth Seminar you will already have all the details you need and these have once again been sent out by Marion Ainslow who is our D1060 Youth Service Chairman.
However I thought I would refresh you all as to how this Competiton is going to be run as we not only have the District competition to work with but we are also hosting the Regional competition too. The Regions that we will be hosting are District 1100, 1150 and 1210 and I'm sure we'll all look forward to meeting up with them too to see and hear what they are doing in their Districts.
Our competition dates are as follows:
District Competition - 9th March 2019
Regional Competition - 23rd March 2019
And the venue for both competitions is:
North Leamington School, Sandy Lane, Blackdown, Leamington Spa. CV32 6RD - where there is a large car park so there should be no issues with parking.
The cut off point for letting me know the names of the schools and pupils taking part will be 9th February 2019 which will give me time to prepare all the necessary paperwork that goes with this competition. If you have any queries re. this please let me know.
The National Competition is going to be held on Sunday, 12th May 2019 at The Rotary Showcase at The RIBI Conference, Nottingham, as confirmed this morning by RIBI Alcester.
As the competition is being held at North Leamington School, I would like to point out that we are using their Theatre, which holds 300 visitors, so it is very important for Clubs to support this competition if possible. If you are getting teams into this competition can you please encourage as many members and family members to attend as you can and, if you're not getting a team into this competition, can Clubs get as many of their members as is possible to come along and see and hear the quality of the Students as they give their presentations. It's a truly memorable occasion and one not to be missed. It would be so worthwhile if we can get as many people at these competitions as is possible to show the Students we are supporting them. I know we are all busy people but please try and be there.
If you are staying all day, as some people do, can you all bring your lunch with you as you have in the past, as it will be difficult to quantify numbers attending. If you need to contact me for any reason, my home phone no. is 01926 843 336 or email me: rachel.hinton@tiscali.co.uk .
Looking forward to hearing from you.
My best wishes to you all, Rachel Hinton D1060 Youth Speaks Organiser

PLASTICS PROJECT FOR CLUBS AND SCHOOLS 2018/19. Issued by D Sec to all clubs and to D Team The district Environmental project for 2018/19 is addressing cutting down on plastic pollution. The project comprises a plastic campaign and a plastic challenge for Rotarians and a competition on plastic for schools. The campaign was launched at the district Conference in Southport in October on the Environment stand in the House of Friendship, where delegates pledged to cut down on plastic use with a signature. Members in clubs are invited to sign and pledge to a reduction in their plastic consumption in household items, and to carry out a plastic challenge over a period of two weeks or engage with selected activities from the challenge. Pledge signitures will be collected by assistant governors when they visit the clubs and at Rotary events. Challenge sheets will be distributed at the district council meeting and sent out to clubs by the district secretary (see attached). Clubs are also encouraged to involve local schools that they work with to participate in the save the planet from plastic pollution competition. Pupils are invited to design a poster or leaflet on the best ways of cutting down on plastic use, and also to make a gremlin or monster from waste plastic bottles and materials. Information posters are available and a copy will be sent to all clubs (see attached) Please join in and take part in the project. An exhibition of project submissions will be launched in June 2019. TIPS ON EASY WAYS TO USE LESS PLASTIC. 1 Drink out of glasses. 2 Use a stainless steal or glass water bottle. 3 Keep a metal or wooden fork and spoon handy and avoid using a plastic utensil. 4 Purchase wooden toys. 5 Use only real or bio degradable plates. 6 Save glass jars and use them instead of plastic items. 7 Use cloth or reusable bags for shopping not plastic ones. 8Compost so you use fewer garbage black bags. 9 Buy grocery items packaged in glass instead of plastic when possible. For more information contact gabrielle @ back.f9.co.uk or phone 02476417217. Gabrielle Back District Environment Officer.
